HISTORY OF AIRSTREAM TRAVEL TRAILERS
Wally Byam was an avid camper who loved the outdoors; he did the first travel trailer experiment in the late 1920s that combined a tent-like contraption with a Model T chassis. After some time, he started improving the design, which became what is now famous as the first actual Airstream travel trailer. In 1921, after graduating from Stanford University, he used his experience in a school newspaper to enter the world of journalism and advertising. In the late 1920s, the Byam Publishing Co. owned different magazines. At the same time, he married his first wife, Marianne James, and the People went camping regularly, but Marion did not enjoy sleeping on the ground in a tent.
In 1929, he got the idea to build a travel trailer so that Marion could enjoy camping. He started with a Model T chassis that did not provide much protection from elements; then, he went back to drawing or designing a teardrop-shaped structure with a stove sleeping space and an ice chest. Both of them, Marion and Wally, took the trailer on a camping trip and loved it as much as their fellow travelers. In 1931, there was a significant demand for travel trailers, so he opened a factory in Culver City, CA, to build a model that we recognize as the first Airstream model, which is called Torpedo. He worked with his business partner William D. Yearling, who also had a background in auto machines and plumbing.
The model becomes famous because of this streamlined design as Torpedo featured a floor plan with a lot of walking space, icebox storage, and a stove. Now, the Airstream brand has been synonymous with timeless quality design and craftsmanship with a sense of adventure.
