A GUIDE TO WINTERIZING YOUR AIRSTREAM TOURING COACH

Winterization is an integral part of RV ownership if you keep your Airstream in a place where winter temperature is below freezing point. To winterize your recreational vehicle, you must follow the following guide.

PLUMBING

In the middle of winter, if your face bursts, then it is going to be the worst experience, so you must make sure that your plumbing is ready for the colder winter. Whether you have the best option of a travel trailer like Airstream Interstate, Atlas Touring coach, Mercedes Benz chassis, or Rangeline touring coach, you have to make sure that your pipe does not freeze by flushing all of the water out of the lines.

RV winterization is not only about protecting against frozen pipes or removing the food from storage cupboards to remove batteries for winter storage. Follow all the tips for best housekeeping practices to ensure your coach is always ready for new adventures once the weather warms up again.

The first step is understanding how much winterization you need for your recreational vehicle. Many owners winterize their motorhomes by removing the water and maybe cycling RV antifreeze with the help of the system. Some of them keep their Airstreme and only use it once in spring. If you store your travel trailer, an entire winterization regime should be followed.

COLLECT THE SUPPLIES

Before starting the winter season process, make sure that you have all the necessary supplies with you. These supplies include,

  • A water heater bypass kit
  • Basic hand tools
  • Nontoxic RV antifreeze 
  • RV water pump converter kit

Remove the water from the freshwater tank.

Start your process by removing or emptying the freshwater tank. Open the drain valve to let all the water out, and once the tank is empty, close the drain valve.

In case, your Airstream touring coach does not have a bypass kit installed, then you are required to do this to prevent antifreeze from entering the water heater. 

First, place the water heater and find the bypass valve that will be used to close the water heater from the rest of the plumbing. To bypass the water heater, you should turn the valve to make sure that antifreeze will not enter the water heater tank.

PUMP ANTIFREEZE IN THE SYSTEM.

To the inlet side of the water pump converter kit, you should connect the hose and place the other end into a container of RV antifreeze. 

Turn the water pump on, take antifreeze from the container, and then pump it through the plumbing system.

 Start this process with the farthest faucet from the pump. After this, open the hot and cold water taps and let the antifreeze Run until it closes out smoothly. Do this for each shower toilet or any other water outlet. 

Remember the outdoor shower or any other water fixtures.

  • Protect the drains
  • Check the battery
  • Cover and store

If you want to store it, you should cover your airstream touring coach with RV covers to protect it from the different elements. You can also keep your recreational vehicle indoors for a covered storage facility to add protection.

Following all the steps, you can ensure your Airstream is sufficiently protected from winter weather. Proper winterization helps prevent frozen pipes, damaged plumbing, or other costly issues from low temperatures.
